Chandigarh: On Sunday, Rohtak, Haryana witnessed a unique and touching event as a 22-year-old woman decided to renounce worldly attachments and become a Jain Sadhvi. This decision became an inspiration not only for her family but also for the entire community. The young woman tied rakhis to her brothers for the last time before having her head shaved on this sacred occasion.
She then adopted a new name and embarked on her spiritual journey. The ceremony was highly emotional, attended by family members and local residents.
Six-Hour Initiation Ceremony, an Outpouring of Emotions
The initiation ceremony, held at a Jain temple in the city, lasted approximately six hours. Hundreds of devotees, Jain Acharyas, family members, and city residents were present. Following Jain traditions, the woman first tied rakhis to her brothers and then, by sacrificing her hair, severed ties with worldly life.
Name Changed, Identity Transformed – Now Sadhvi 'Siddhapragna'
Upon accepting initiation, the woman relinquished her former name and adopted the name 'Siddhapragna'. She will no longer identify with any relationship or worldly pleasure. Under the guidance of the Acharya, she took the vows necessary to become a Jain Sadhvi. "I have chosen this life to pursue self-purification and liberation," Siddhapragna said before the initiation.
The Final Rakhi Bond: An Emotional Brother-Sister Moment
The most emotional moment arrived when Siddhapragna tied rakhis to her two younger brothers for the last time. Tears welled up in the brothers' eyes, but pride in their sister's decision was also evident. Her parents, overcome with emotion, stated that while the path their daughter had chosen is difficult, it is also noble. This sacrifice serves as an inspiration to us all. Siddhapragna had been immersed in Jain religious discourses, penance, and meditation for the past two years.
She decided to renounce worldly life after completing her college education. Despite initial family objections, she remained steadfast in her resolve. Ultimately, upon demonstrating her unwavering determination, her family accepted her decision and offered their blessings.
Community Appreciation and Support
Various sections of society have lauded this decision. Prominent members of the local Jain community stated that in today's materialistic age, when young people are often misguided, a young woman's commitment to renunciation provides a new direction for society. This is not merely an initiation but a revolution – inspiring youth towards self-discipline, restraint, and liberation.
After the initiation, Sadhvi Siddhapragna was sent to a Jain temple under the care of an Acharya, where she will pursue further religious studies, penance, and discourse. Her life will now be dedicated to vows, restraint, penance, and silent meditation.
