Renowned Bangladeshi Actress Meher Afroz Shaon Arrested After Family Attack and Arson
Meher Afroz Shaon: Prominent Bangladeshi actress Meher Afroz Shaon was arrested Thursday evening. According to media reports, Dhaka police detained her on charges of conspiracy against the state. Prior to her arrest, her family was attacked and their home was set ablaze.
Charges of Sedition?
Meher Afroz Shaon is known for openly expressing her views on political and social issues. Reports suggest her arrest stems from her criticism of Bangladesh's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch Rezaul Karim Malik told the Dhaka Tribune, "She was detained in Dhanmondi on Thursday night." Police are currently interrogating her.
Family Attacked, Home Set on Fire
Hours before her arrest, Meher Afroz Shaon's family was attacked in Jamalpur. Her father's house, located near Norundi Railway Station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, was set on fire by students and locals around 6 pm.
The house belonged to her father, engineer Mohammad Ali, who had sought nomination from the Awami League in the previous national elections. Her mother, Begum Tahura Ali, served two terms in parliament as a reserved women's seat representative.
Who is Meher Afroz Shaon?
Meher Afroz Shaon is an actress, singer, and director. The 43-year-old began her career as a child artist. She is a recipient of the Bangladeshi National Award for her melodious voice.
Her first television show was 'Swadhinata Amar Swadhinata'. She has since appeared in numerous television dramas and films including 'Dui Duari', 'Chandrokotha', and 'Shyamol Chhaya'.
Personally, she was married to renowned Bangladeshi writer and director Humayun Ahmed. However, she was also accused of causing the breakdown of Humayun Ahmed's first marriage.
