Entertainment: This year, Maharashtra's film industry has captured everyone's attention by sending four b contenders to the Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's most prestigious film festivals. A panel of experts appointed by the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation (MFRCDC), a collaborator with the Maharashtra government in the cultural and film sectors, selected these four Marathi films. Maharashtra's Cultural Minister, Ashish Shelar, extended his best wishes to these films, stating that they will further strengthen the international recognition of Marathi cinema.

The Four Selected Films and Their Significance

1. Film - Sthal (Place)

  • Director: Pravin Patil
  • Theme: Arranged marriage practices in rural society

Sthal is a sensitive narrative that challenges patriarchy, casteism, and social conservatism in rural India. The film's protagonist is shown fighting for her rights while struggling under the weight of tradition. Minister Shelar, highlighting the film's social relevance, noted that it is not easy to depict rural problems with such meticulous detail on screen.

2. Film - Snow Flower

  • Director: Gajendra Ahire
  • Theme: A Russia-Konkan cross-country love story

This film narrates a love story's journey, starting from the snowy landscapes of Siberia and reaching the verdant coastal region of Konkan in Maharashtra. Bridging two cultures, the film presents a tapestry of love, cultural clashes, and self-discovery.

3. Film - Khalid Ka Shivaji

  • Director: Salman Khan
  • Theme: Religious identity and national inspiration

Told from the perspective of a teenager named Khalid, this film shows how a young man, divided by religious differences, finds confidence and courage through the story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shelar, praising the film, stated that it mirrors a society where the strength of brotherhood is its greatest asset.

4. Film - Juna Furniture (Old Furniture)

  • Director-Actor: Mahesh Manjrekar
  • Theme: Challenges faced by senior citizens

This social drama, woven around senior citizens, showcases the generational gap through the story of a master furniture maker. The film sensitively portrays the complexities of changing relationships, respect, and loneliness affecting the elderly.

Selection Process and Shelar's Message

The Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation began the process of bringing Marathi films to Cannes in 2016. This year, the expert committee recommended two official selections ('Sthal', 'Snow Flower', 'Khalid Ka Shivaji') and one special screening slot ('Juna Furniture').

Minister Ashish Shelar said on this occasion

This gathering of Marathi films in Cannes is a testament to the diversity and quality of our cinema. The selection of four films proves that Marathi cinema is as impactful on the international stage as any larger industry.

The Importance of Cannes and the Role of Marathi Cinema

Held every year in May, this festival attracts filmmakers, critics, and stars from around the world. Participating in Cannes means not just gaining screen time but also receiving global recognition for one's art and ideas. Marathi films have often showcased social issues on a limited budget, and their presence at Cannes will enhance both their reach and impact.

Shelar further stated that Marathi cinema focuses on complex societal issues such as casteism, patriarchy, and loneliness. Showcasing these themes at a prestigious venue like Cannes means that our stories will resonate with audiences worldwide.
