Entertainment: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has received a third summons from Mumbai Police. He has been asked to appear before the police on April 5th. The case pertains to allegedly offensive remarks made against the state's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. According to police officials, Kamra was summoned twice previously but avoided appearing for the investigation.
The controversy originated from a parody song performed during a show in Mumbai. In this song, Kamra allegedly satirized Eknath Shinde. Shinde, who became the chief of Shiv Sena after a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, was reportedly referred to as a "traitor" in the parody.
What is the case about?
During a show in Mumbai, Kunal Kamra presented a parody song that allegedly targeted Eknath Shinde. However, Shinde's name was not explicitly mentioned in the song. This song sparked controversy, leading to vandalism at the studio where the show was recorded by Shiv Sena workers.
Based on a complaint filed by a Shiv Sena MLA, the Khar police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Kamra under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to defamation. Subsequently, the police issued the third summons against Kamra.
Anticipatory Bail and Legal Proceedings
The Madras High Court has granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail. Justice Sundar Mohan also issued a notice to the Khar police. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for April 7th. On Monday, a team from Khar police visited Kamra's residence in Mahim, Mumbai, to ascertain his compliance with the summons. This action was taken because Kamra had failed to appear in response to the previous two summons.
