Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Takes a Jibe at Mamata Banerjee, Highlights Peaceful Situation Amidst Wakf Law Protests

Assam CM-Mamata Banerjee: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reacting to the Wakf Amendment Act on April 12, 2025, contrasted the peaceful situation in Assam with the violence witnessed in West Bengal. He stated that despite Assam's approximately 40% Muslim population, only three locations saw minor protests against the Wakf law, each involving fewer than 150 people. He attributed this to the effective groundwork of the Assam Police, which helped maintain peace and order.

Limited Protests, Peaceful Atmosphere in Assam

In a post on the social media platform X, CM Sarma stated, "Assam maintains a peaceful situation today, except for small protests at three locations, each involving less than 150 people." He described these protests against the Wakf law as limited and commended the Assam Police for their effective steps in maintaining peace.

Praise for Assam Police

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Assam Police's work, stating, "Congratulations to the Assam Police for their extensive groundwork, which helped maintain peace and order." He also mentioned that the people of Assam are united beyond caste, creed, or religion and are preparing for the Bohag Bihu festival with joy and harmony.

The Wakf Amendment Act and Protests

Protests against the Wakf law have taken place in various parts of the country, including violent incidents in West Bengal. The Wakf bill, passed by Parliament on April 5th, received Presidential assent. The Rajya Sabha passed it with 95 votes against 128, while the Lok Sabha passed it with the support of 288 MPs after a lengthy debate. Subsequently, protests erupted across the nation against the bill, but Assam witnessed relatively peaceful demonstrations.
