Delhi to Crack Down on Illegal E-rickshaws, No Ban Planned
Last Updated: 1 day ago

The Delhi government will crack down on the illegal operation of e-rickshaws under its new EV policy. However, no ban on e-rickshaws will be imposed; instead, the government plans to implement new schemes to improve this service.

Delhi News: E-rickshaws have become a crucial mode of last-mile connectivity in Delhi. However, their illegal operation has compelled the Delhi government to formulate a new EV policy. The Delhi government has clarified that it will not ban e-rickshaws, but will take strict action against illegally operating vehicles. The number of e-rickshaws in Delhi is increasing, with a significant portion operating illegally.

Illegal Operation of E-rickshaws and Increasing Traffic Congestion

According to reports, in 2024, Delhi Police issued over 200,000 challans (citations) to e-rickshaw drivers, primarily for incorrect parking, operating without licenses, and safety violations. While the use of e-rickshaws is increasing in Delhi, concerns regarding their speed and safety are constantly rising. Many e-rickshaws operate illegally on major roads, increasing traffic congestion and the risk of accidents.

Need for Safety and Registration

Many e-rickshaws in Delhi operate without registration, and some are overloaded. This poses a safety risk to passengers as these vehicles are prone to accidents.

The Delhi government aims to ensure that e-rickshaw drivers are allowed on the roads only after registration to guarantee safety.

New EV Policy for E-rickshaws

Delhi government officials acknowledge that e-rickshaws are a useful service but that necessary steps will be taken to make it better and more organized. The new electric vehicle policy may include subsidies for this service to improve its operation.

Delhi's Transport Minister, Dr. Pankaj Singh, has stated that action will be taken against illegal e-rickshaws and that this process will be implemented soon.

E-rickshaw Challans and Registration

A total of 278,090 challans were issued to e-rickshaws in 2024, most for incorrect parking and operating without licenses. According to Delhi Police, 64,852 challans have been issued in the first three months of this year, with 37,835 for incorrect parking.

Under the new policy, the Delhi government plans to organize e-rickshaws to improve passenger safety and road transport. The government aims for this service to contribute to reducing pollution and provide an affordable transportation option.
