The Ministry of Defence has signed a significant contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 156 Prachand Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs). This deal marks a major step towards further strengthening the combat capabilities of the Indian Army and Air Force.
New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of Defence has inked a major deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 156 ‘Prachand’ Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs). The delivery of these state-of-the-art, indigenously built helicopters will commence three years from now and be completed within the next five years. The total cost of this contract is ₹62,700 crore, with 90 helicopters allocated to the Indian Army and 66 to the Indian Air Force.
Made in India, Unmatched Globally
‘Prachand’ is India's first indigenous attack helicopter, designed and developed by HAL. Weighing 5.8 tons, its lightweight design makes it agile and maneuverable. This helicopter is capable of operating at high altitudes, even in areas like Siachen, with full combat effectiveness. Its most significant feature is its ability to fly at altitudes of up to 21,000 feet, carrying weapons and fuel.
The Prachand helicopter boasts advanced features including a pilot helmet-mounted sight, an infrared sighting system, and a radar-laser missile warning system. Its body and rotors are designed for enhanced protection against ballistic impacts. Furthermore, its low radar signature design adds to its lethality. The helicopter is capable of day-and-night operations in all weather conditions.
Separate Versions for Army and Air Force
The Indian Army's ‘Prachand’ helicopters are equipped with a 20 mm gun, 70 mm rockets, and the ‘Helina’ anti-tank guided missile. The Air Force version incorporates the French ‘Mistral-2’ missile. Both versions are designed for high-altitude operations. The need for a light combat helicopter was acutely felt during the Kargil War. ‘Prachand’ is the only attack helicopter in the world capable of carrying weapons and fuel at altitudes of 5,000 meters. It has a maximum speed of 330 km/h and a combat radius of 500 km.
‘Prachand’ can be used in anti-infantry, anti-armor, anti-UAV, and counter-insurgency operations. This helicopter will prove invaluable not only on the battlefield but also in counter-terrorism operations. The deployment of ‘Prachand’ will significantly enhance the firepower of Indian security forces. This game-changing helicopter will be a crucial element in strengthening India's strategic interests, propelling India's military might to new heights.
