PM Modi's Spiritual Experience

During his visit to Thailand, Prime Minister Modi visited Wat Pho Temple, paid his respects to the Reclining Buddha, and offered prayers. He was accompanied by Thailand's Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. At the temple, PM Modi offered a "Sanghadana" to senior Buddhist monks, considered a gesture of high respect in Buddhist tradition.

What Makes Wat Pho Temple Special?

Wat Pho, locally known as "Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahawihan," is one of Thailand's oldest and most important Buddhist temples. It is world-famous for its gigantic Reclining Buddha statue, approximately 46 meters long and 15 meters high.

This statue depicts the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana and was installed in 1848. Upon entering the temple, one can experience its grandeur and spiritual energy.

History of the Temple

Wat Pho's history begins in the 16th century when it was established as a simple monastery. However, its current form emerged during the reigns of King Rama I and, especially, King Rama III. In 1832, the temple underwent significant expansion, primarily with the construction of the south and west vihars. This is where the famous statue resides, attracting millions of tourists and devotees every year.

Architecture and Religious Significance

The temple complex houses over 1,000 Buddha images and more than 90 stupas.
This temple is not only a religious site but is also considered a center for Thai traditional medicine and massage.
It was also Thailand's first public education center and has been recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage site.
