Shiromani Akali Dal Poised to Elect Sukhbir Badal as President Before Baisakhi

Punjab Politics: A leadership change within the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is anticipated before Baisakhi. Former party president Sukhbir Singh Badal is likely to reclaim the party's leadership. Sources suggest that a General House meeting of the SAD is scheduled for April 10th, where a proposal nominating Sukhbir Badal will be put forth, and he is expected to be unanimously elected as the new President.

Working Committee Meeting to Finalize the Process

An important meeting of the SAD's Working Committee has been convened today to finalize the election process and the list of delegates. With the election schedule finalized, it's almost certain that Sukhbir Badal will face no challenge this time.

New President to be Introduced at April 13th Baisakhi Conference

The party plans to formally introduce the new president at the traditional Baisakhi Conference in Talwandi Sabo on April 13th. The Baisakhi Conference holds historical significance in SAD politics, as it coincides with the anniversary of the founding of Khalsa Panth and the beginning of the Rabi harvest in Punjab. The SAD's main political base has always been the rural areas.

SAD Leader Peer Mohammad Resigns from the Party

Meanwhile, senior party leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema stated that the Working Committee meeting on Tuesday will decide the timeline for completing the election process. Meanwhile, Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, head of the All India Sikh Students Federation, resigned from the party, questioning the appointment of the Jathedar (religious leader).

Peer Mohammad also stated that if the Gandhi family apologizes to the SAD, there could be a possibility of reconciliation between the Congress and the Akali Dal. However, Dr. Cheema responded by stating that Peer Mohammad alone is responsible for this statement.

Over 500 Delegates to Participate in the Election

According to Cheema, over 500 delegates will participate in the SAD's election process. Four delegates have been appointed from each of Punjab's 117 assembly constituencies, totaling 468 delegates from the state. Delegates from other states will also participate in the process.

Resigned on November 16, 2024

It is noteworthy that Sukhbir Badal resigned from the post of party president on November 16, 2024. However, the party's Working Committee accepted his resignation on January 10, 2025, under pressure from Sri Akal Takht Sahib. His reappointment is now considered almost certain.
