Fine Imposed on Pro-Monarchy Demonstrators
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has imposed a fine of NPR 793,000 on former King Gyanendra Shah for damage to public property and the environment during protests in the capital. These protests were allegedly organized at Shah's behest. The KMC has sent a letter to Shah's residence in Maharajgunj, demanding compensation for the damages.
Passport Cancellation Process Initiated
The Nepalese government has also initiated the process of cancelling Gyanendra Shah's passport. This step is taken in response to violations of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Finance Act, 2021, and the Waste Management Act, 2020. Reports indicate that protesters littered streets and sidewalks and damaged government property.
Tense Situation in Kathmandu
On Friday, pro-monarchy supporters staged violent demonstrations in various parts of Kathmandu. They engaged in stone-throwing, attacked a political party office, set vehicles on fire, and looted shops. Two people, including a TV cameraman, died in the violence, and 110 others were injured.
Gyanendra Shah Accused of Inciting the Protests
The Kathmandu administration's report states that the protest was organized by Shah's supporters. According to the report, Durga Prasad, an organizer of the protest, met with Gyanendra Shah the day before, receiving apparent approval for the demonstration. Shah recently stated that the responsibility of defending the country and strengthening national unity now rests with the people. Following this statement, pro-monarchy protests intensified in Nepal.
Civil Society Criticizes Gyanendra Shah
Several Nepalese civil society leaders have bly criticized Shah's political activism. They argue that it goes against Nepal's democratic system and poses a threat to the country's stability. Eight civil society leaders issued a joint statement saying Shah's actions are undermining Nepal's nation-building efforts.
