Nepal Violence: Situation Returns to Normal After Curfew Lifted; Two Dead, Over 100 Arrested. Protesters Attacked Government Property and Media Houses; Army Deployed.
Nepal-Violence: The situation in Nepal is returning to normal following violent protests. Authorities lifted the curfew imposed on Saturday morning in the eastern part of Kathmandu. The situation escalated on Friday after violent clashes between pro-monarchy protesters and security forces, necessitating the curfew. Protesters damaged government and private property, creating a tense atmosphere in the capital.
Two Killed in Violence
Two people, including a cameraman from a local TV channel, died during Friday's violent demonstrations. With the situation spiraling out of control, authorities deployed the army. According to Nepal Police, 53 police officers, 22 Armed Police Force personnel, and 35 protesters were injured during the violence.
105 Protesters Detained, Several Leaders Arrested
Police have detained 105 individuals involved in the violence and arson. Among those arrested are the General Secretary of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Dhawal Shamsher Rana, and central member Ravindra Mishra. Police stated that Durga Prasai, a key organizer of the violent protests, remains at large. Protesters attacked government buildings, vehicles, and media houses, setting fire to 14 buildings and completely destroying 9 vehicles.
Attack on Media Houses
Protesters also attacked Kantipur Television and Annapurna Media House. Security forces attempted to quell the violence, but protesters broke through barricades and moved towards the parliament building. According to the administration, the protest was organized in support of former King Gyanendra.
Violence Erupts Over Demands for Restoration of Monarchy
Nepal abolished its 240-year-old monarchy in 2008, declaring the country a federal democratic republic. However, a faction of pro-monarchy supporters has been demanding the restoration of the monarchy. Former King Gyanendra recently issued a video message urging his supporters to intensify their movement. Following this, supporters held a rally on March 9th, escalating the protests.
