US Warns Russia of New Sanctions Unless Peace Talks Progress

The United States has warned Russia that new sanctions could be imposed if it delays peace talks with Ukraine. A recent phone conversation took place between Trump and Putin.

Washington/New Delhi. The United States has once again adopted a firm stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday explicitly stated that new sanctions could be imposed if Russia does not demonstrate seriousness regarding peace talks. He made this statement before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

US Warns Russia

Addressing the committee, Marco Rubio stated, "We have information that Russia is preparing a formal ceasefire proposal. If that proposal emerges, we will consider advancing the peace process. However, if Russia delays or shows no intention, then strict measures will have to be taken."

Rubio's statement comes at a time when the war in Ukraine is intensifying, and the possibility of a concrete peace proposal remains elusive.

What's Next? A Hint of New Sanctions

When asked if the US would impose new economic sanctions if Russia does not present a formal peace proposal, Rubio responded, "If it becomes clear that Russia does not want peace and wants to continue the conflict, imposing sanctions will be the only option left."

Rubio also added that the US supports every diplomatic effort to end the war, but it is also essential to ensure that no country openly spreads violence by violating international laws.

Trump Hesitates on Immediate Sanctions Threats

The US Secretary of State also clarified President Donald Trump's stance in his statement. He said, "President Trump does not want to issue any direct sanctions warnings at the moment. He believes this could cause Russia to withdraw from negotiations."

According to Rubio, President Trump is extremely cautious about this issue and wants to keep the channels of communication open. He emphasizes a "respectful dialogue" to bring both countries to the negotiating table.

Trump Holds Two-Hour Conversation with Putin

A day before Rubio's statement, President Trump informed the media that he had a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump claimed that following this conversation, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an "immediate" ceasefire and peace talks.

This is considered a major diplomatic achievement for the Trump administration, especially after the recent peace talks in Istanbul ended without any concrete conclusion.

Vatican to Host Peace Talks

President Trump also stated that the Vatican, under the chairmanship of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, is ready to host these peace talks. He said, "The Pope's initiative and moral leadership will ensure that these talks are impartial and driven by a spirit of peace."

This proposal is also receiving support from some European Union countries and the UN Secretary-General. It is believed that negotiations in a religious and neutral venue like the Vatican could create a more amicable atmosphere.

Istanbul Talks Fail

Earlier, the talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul ended without any concrete results. However, an agreement was reached on the exchange of prisoners, offering a small ray of hope.
