The news agency ANI has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the American company OpenAI. The Indian Music Industry (IMI) now plans to join this case. The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to OpenAI, directing them to respond to IMI's petition.

ANI alleges that OpenAI used ANI's content without permission to train its ChatGPT model. Furthermore, IMI has also levied accusations against OpenAI, stating that the American company used their sound recordings without authorization to train its AI model. The Delhi High Court has sought a response from OpenAI, and it remains to be seen how the American company will react.

Music Companies' Concerns

Music companies are concerned that OpenAI and other AI companies may be extracting songs, lyrics, music compositions, and sound recordings from the internet, constituting direct copyright infringement. These companies claim that the unauthorized use of this material violates the rights of artists and companies.

Previously, in November 2023, a lawsuit was filed against OpenAI in Germany, accusing the company of using content without permission to train its AI model. Now, ANI and IMI have leveled similar accusations against OpenAI, prompting the Delhi High Court to issue a notice to the American company.

Delhi High Court's Direction

On Monday, the Delhi High Court made a significant observation in the ongoing case against OpenAI. The court stated that affected parties should file their lawsuits separately and that not everyone can be included in ANI's lawsuit. The next hearing of the case will be on February 21st.

Meanwhile, it's also noteworthy that several lawsuits are ongoing against OpenAI in the United States. The New York Times and other major companies have taken legal action against OpenAI, demanding billions of rupees in compensation.
