New Delhi: Returning to Earth is as exciting as it is challenging for astronauts. After spending months in space, their bodies undergo several changes. One interesting change is called 'baby feet'. This is a condition where astronauts walk with a wobbling gait, similar to that of babies. Scientists believe that the absence of gravity affects the body's balance and also alters the skin on the feet.

What causes baby feet?

While in space, the thick skin on the astronauts' feet gradually wears away. This is because they don't need to use their soles. On Earth, when we walk, our soles are constantly in contact with the surface, making the skin there tough. However, this doesn't happen in space because astronauts float in zero gravity. When they return to Earth, their feet become extremely delicate and sensitive, much like a newborn's. Therefore, they are unable to walk properly for some time.

Effect of lack of gravity on balance

The absence of gravity not only affects the skin, but also weakens the body's muscles and bones. After spending months in space, astronauts have difficulty walking on Earth because their bodies are trying to adapt to gravity again. Extended stays in space also lead to bone density loss, weakening bones and increasing the risk of fractures.

How do astronauts return to normal?

Astronauts are advised to exercise regularly to maintain their muscle and bone strength even while in space. They use specially designed exercise machines on the space station for about 2.5 hours daily. These include deadlifts, squats, bench pressing, and treadmill running. In addition, they take calcium and vitamin D supplements to maintain bone strength.

How long does recovery take after returning from space?

After returning to Earth, it can take astronauts several weeks to fully recover. During this time, they undergo a special rehabilitation program that includes physical therapy and balance-improving exercises. Gradually, their skin, bones, and muscles regain strength, and they are able to walk and move as comfortably as before.
