Today, we will narrate the story of one such truly generous individual who did not cease giving even in the face of death: Karna. Karna's generosity is so unique that even Lord Krishna was astonished upon witnessing it.
Karna – A Remarkable Warrior and Great Philanthropist
Karna is a character in the Mahabharata who has always been a subject of discussion. He was the son of Surya (the Sun God), but his life was filled with struggles. Society scorned him as a *Sutaputra* (son of a charioteer), yet Karna never surrendered. Duryodhana offered him respect and honor, thus Karna remained loyal to him throughout his life, regardless of whether it aligned with dharma (righteousness) or adharma (unrighteousness).
Although Karna fought on the Kauravas' side, his generosity, honesty, and loyalty earned him a place in everyone's heart. From Krishna to Arjuna himself, everyone admired his valor and generosity, even though their paths diverged.
The Day of the War When Karna Confronted Arjuna
In the Mahabharata war, the day arrived when Karna and Arjuna faced each other. Both were magnificent archers, neither to be underestimated. However, that day, fate favored Arjuna. Arjuna, with his arrows, severely wounded Karna.
Karna fell to the ground, his condition critical. Yet, he remained calm and composed. Then, Krishna, looking towards Arjuna, said, "Karna will be remembered for centuries for his valor and generosity."
Arjuna was surprised. He questioned, "How can Karna be the greatest philanthropist? He fought on the side of adharma."
Krishna's Disguise as a Brahmin
To dispel Arjuna's doubts, Krishna devised a plan. He disguised himself as a Brahmin and approached the wounded Karna. Even in his pain, Karna respectfully greeted the Brahmin upon his arrival.
The Brahmin said, "I have come to ask for alms, but seeing your condition, it seems inappropriate. You are near death; what can you possibly give?"
Karna Breaks His Gold Tooth
Karna smiled and replied, "Charity is not determined by one's physical state, but by the intention of the heart. If I have anything left, I will give it."
Then, he picked up a stone, broke his gold tooth, and donated it to the Brahmin. Everyone present was astonished. Despite his suffering, Karna's generosity remained unwavering.
Krishna's Revelation, Karna's Boon
As soon as Karna gave the gold tooth to the Brahmin, the Brahmin revealed his true form. He was Krishna himself. Krishna declared, "O Karna! Even at death's door, you did not abandon your generosity. You are truly the greatest giver."
Krishna asked Karna to ask for a boon. Karna humbly replied, "O Madhusudana! My only wish is that you yourself perform my last rites and ensure the welfare of people from my caste."
What Lessons Can We Learn From This Story?
This story teaches us that true values are not determined by one's side or circumstance, but by one's actions and intentions. Karna fought on the side of adharma, yet his inherent human qualities—compassion, charity, and selflessness—make him a great individual.
