Mahashivratri 2025: Why is this year special?
This year, Mahashivratri falls on February 26, 2025, and significantly, the final Shahi Snan (royal bath) of the Maha Kumbh Mela will also take place on the same day. This day is considered extremely auspicious not only religiously but also astrologically. It is said that any devotee who observes a fast with faith and devotion and performs the abhishekam of Lord Shiva on this day will be freed from all suffering.
Shiva temples across the country are elaborately decorated, community feasts are organized, and devotees fill the atmosphere with chants of "Har Har Mahadev," creating a divine ambiance. If you too wish to receive the special grace of Lord Shiva, don't forget to offer his favorite dish – Makhane ki Kheer (foxnut kheer) – as Prasad on this Mahashivratri.
Why is Makhane ki Kheer dear to Lord Shiva?
According to mythological beliefs, foxnuts are considered a sattvic and energy-giving food. It is also very beneficial for those observing fasts, as it is not only light and easily digestible but also provides energy. The Shiv Purana also mentions that if a devotee prepares and offers Makhane ki Kheer to Shiva on Mahashivratri, prosperity remains in their home, and all their wishes are fulfilled.
Simple method of making Makhane ki Kheer
Ingredients
• Foxnuts (Makhana) – 1.5 cups

• Ghee (Clarified Butter) – 1 tablespoon
• Sugar – to taste
• Saffron strands – a few
• Nutmeg powder – 1 teaspoon
• Cardamom powder – 1/2 teaspoon
• Cashews, almonds, pistachios – finely chopped
Method
• First, heat ghee in a pan and roast the foxnuts over low heat until lightly golden.
• Now, lightly grind the roasted foxnuts in a mixer, so they dissolve well in the kheer.
• Boil the milk in a large vessel and add the ground foxnuts.
• Cook it over low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the milk from sticking to the bottom.
• When the milk thickens slightly, add sugar and dissolve it well.
