From the Pages of History: The Morning of March 26, 1971

The foundation of Bangladesh's independence was laid in the 1970 general elections, where the Awami League won a landslide victory in East Pakistan. However, the West Pakistani authorities refused to acknowledge this victory. As a result, discontent grew within the Bengali community, leading Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to call for a civil disobedience movement in his historic speech on March 7, 1971.

March 25, 1971: Operation Searchlight and the Beginning of the Conflict

The Pakistani army launched "Operation Searchlight" on the night of March 25th, resulting in the massacre of thousands of innocent civilians. In response, the independence of Bangladesh was declared on March 26, 1971. This conflict ushered in a new era, culminating in Bangladesh's emergence as an independent nation on December 16, 1971, nine months later.

Nationwide Celebrations and Tribute Programs

In 2025, numerous events were held across Bangladesh to mark Independence Day. The national flag was hoisted at government offices, educational institutions, and public places. The main ceremony took place at the National Martyrs' Monument in Savar, Dhaka, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
