China: A Diverse Nation with Contrasting Aspects

China is the world's most populous country and the third largest by land area. It spans a vast portion of East Asia, with its fourteen provinces bordering the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and the South China Sea coastlines. Two-thirds of China's territory is mountainous or desert, with only about ten percent suitable for agriculture. The eastern half of the country is part of one of the world's finest river basins.

 

Capital Punishment in China

China is known for its stringent punishments. When a death sentence is imposed, it is carried out by lethal injection or execution by firing squad.

 

Poverty

While China often downplays its poverty figures, World Bank reports indicate that over 100 million people are impoverished, surviving on less than US$1 a day.

 

Internet Censorship

Freedom of expression is limited in China. Approximately 3,000 websites are blocked under internet censorship policies. Citizens are directed to utilize only government-approved websites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Google.

 

The World's Largest Empty Mall

Known for its manufacturing output and large workforce, China also boasts a mall that is largely deserted, save for a few food stalls at the entrance.

Cave Dwellings

In the Shanxi province, communities carve homes into caves. Reports from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme indicate that roughly 35 million people in China reside in cave dwellings.

 

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is a vast earthen and stone fortification, constructed by successive Chinese emperors from the 5th century BCE to the 16th century to defend against northern invaders. Its scale is such that it's even visible from space.

 

Ghost Towns

Despite being the world's most populous country, China has a multitude of ghost towns. Over 65 million vacant homes exist, often priced beyond the reach of most Chinese citizens.

 

Christianity in China

The number of Christians in China has experienced significant growth. The number of Christians in China now exceeds the number in Italy. Reports also indicate that there are more churches in China than in the United States.
