A flock of vultures inhabited a dense forest. They would fly together and hunt together. One day, while soaring, they reached an island teeming with fish and frogs. They lived a life of ease, gorging themselves without effort.
One old vulture in the flock was deeply troubled by this indolence. He repeatedly warned his companions, urging them to resume hunting, to maintain their skills, and to avoid becoming complacent. He cautioned that if they continued this lazy life, they would eventually forget how to hunt. He stressed the need to return to their old forest. The other vultures laughed at his advice, dismissing it as the ramblings of an aging mind. They declared that he was suggesting abandoning their comfortable lives. The flock refused to leave the island.
Days later, the old vulture, pondering his solitude, decided to visit the island again. Upon reaching the island, he was confronted by a horrific scene. All the vultures were dead; only their carcasses remained. He spotted a wounded vulture in a corner. Approaching him, the old vulture inquired about the situation. The wounded vulture explained that a pack of cheetahs had recently attacked the island, killing everyone. Their prolonged inactivity had weakened their flying skills and their ability to defend themselves. The old vulture was heartbroken by the news.
The old vulture returned to his forest, leaving behind the tragic fate of his former companions.
The lesson from this story is – we must protect our abilities and rights at all times. Neglecting our responsibilities due to laziness can prove disastrous in the future.
