Uttar Pradesh's Unexpected Economic Gains from the Maha Kumbh

According to Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and BJP Member of Parliament, an estimated 40 crore pilgrims and approximately ₹2 lakh crore in business transactions were anticipated before the Kumbh Mela began. However, due to an overwhelming response from India and abroad, the spiritual gathering saw over 66 crore pilgrims, resulting in business exceeding ₹3 lakh crore.

Furthermore, significant economic activity was witnessed across various sectors, including hospitality and accommodation, food and beverages, transportation and logistics, religious attire, puja materials, handicrafts, textiles and garments.

A New Direction for the Economy

The Kumbh Mela is not only impacting Prayagraj but is also injecting new momentum into business activities in surrounding cities and towns. During this period, the Uttar Pradesh government invested over ₹7,500 crore in improving Prayagraj's infrastructure.

According to the state government, these funds were utilized to construct 14 new flyovers, six underpasses, over 200 widened roads, new corridors, an expanded railway station, and a modern airport terminal. Additionally, ₹1,500 crore was specifically allocated for Kumbh Mela management and other essential amenities.
