Jaisalmer: A wedding in Keraliya village, Lathi area, Jaisalmer district, sent a b message against the dowry system. The groom refused to accept the ₹5,51,000 offered during the traditional tika ceremony, instead accepting only one rupee and a coconut, initiating a positive change in the community.

Groom's Initiative Sparks a New Beginning in the Village

When the bride's family offered the groom ₹5,51,000 as per tradition, the groom's father, without hesitation, returned the money. They accepted only one rupee and a coconut as a token gesture. This act moved everyone present at the wedding and the villagers. The bride's father praised the decision, stating that such steps would help bring about societal change and liberate fathers from the mindset of viewing their daughters as a burden.

Groom Parmveer Singh's Initiative Praised

Parmveer Singh Kumabawat, a resident of Kantaliya village in Pali district and currently preparing for the civil services, married Nitika Kanwar, daughter of Jethusingh Bhati of Keraliya village, on February 14th. During the wedding, Parmveer refused to accept dowry, accepting only one rupee and a coconut as a token. Parmveer Singh's initiative not only impressed those at the wedding but also sent a positive message throughout the village.

Educated Class Must Lead the Change

The groom stated, "I don't need a dowry. This malpractice should end to bring about societal change, and the educated class must take the initiative. This change won't happen overnight, but a beginning must be made somewhere."

Not only the bride's father, Jethusingh Bhati, but everyone at the wedding appreciated the groom's progressive thinking. Bhati also pledged to work towards ending this tradition and promoting positive change.
