Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cancels Shinde government's ₹3,200 crore cleaning contract. The cancellation of numerous decisions amidst allegations of corruption indicates growing friction within the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.
Maharashtra News: Political tensions are reportedly rising between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Fadnavis has suspended a major decision taken during Shinde's tenure, intensifying concerns of a rift within the alliance.
Fadnavis's Ban on ₹3,200 Crore Contract
Devendra Fadnavis has canceled a ₹3,200 crore contract for mechanical cleaning awarded to the health department under the Shinde government. This contract, awarded to a private Pune-based company on August 30, 2024, entailed an annual cost of ₹638 crore over a three-year period. Allegations of corruption surround the project.
Former Health Minister Tanaji Sawant is accused of awarding the contract to a company lacking relevant experience. The Fadnavis government is now reviewing this decision and may investigate the alleged irregularities.
Cancellation of Multiple Shinde Government Decisions
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hasn't limited his actions to this contract cancellation; he has also suspended several other decisions made by the Shinde government. Beyond the health department, the Fadnavis government has taken a b stance against alleged irregularities in other sectors under the Shinde administration.
Major corruption allegations have also surfaced regarding transfers of health department officials and ambulance purchases during the Shinde government's tenure. A thorough investigation into these matters is anticipated in the coming days.
Ban on Appointments of Ministers' OSDs and Personal Secretaries
Devendra Fadnavis has also shown firmness in the appointment of Ministers' Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) and personal secretaries under the Shinde government. He approved 109 names from a list of 125, rejecting the remaining 16.
Fadnavis explicitly stated that he would not entrust these responsibilities to any middlemen. This decision has even garnered praise from the opposition Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT).
Shiv Sena (UBT) Praises Fadnavis's Decision
Responding to Fadnavis's actions, the Shiv Sena (UBT) stated that this was a crucial step towards instilling order in Maharashtra's governance. They sarcastically remarked, "Fadnavis has begun cleaning the drain of corruption."
Is There a Rift in the BJP-Shiv Sena Alliance?
Devendra Fadnavis's decision has fueled discussions about deepening disagreements between the BJP and Shiv Sena. While Fadnavis has taken a firm stance against corruption, many leaders within the Shinde faction are reportedly uneasy about his actions.
