Sukhbir Singh Badal Re-elected as Shiromani Akali Dal President
Sukhbir Singh Badal has been re-elected as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He has held the party's leadership for 16 years, since 2008.
Sukhbir Singh Badal: Unanimous Re-election
Sukhbir Singh Badal was unanimously elected as the SAD president in Amritsar. This follows his resignation last year, which was accepted by the party's working committee in January.
Party Revolt and Re-elections
Following the Lok Sabha elections last year, some party leaders revolted against Sukhbir Badal's leadership. These leaders included Prem Singh Chandumajra, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Bibi Jagir Kaur, and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. This resulted in a renewed party membership drive and subsequent presidential elections.
Shiromani Akali Dal Addresses Internal Revolt
However, leaders from the rebel faction claim that the Shiromani Akali Dal's membership drive disregarded the orders of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. While Akal Takht formed its own seven-member committee, the Akali Dal proceeded with its membership drive, ignoring the committee. The rebel leaders plan to conduct their own membership drive in May.
Controversy Surrounding Sukhbir Badal's Leadership
Sukhbir Badal and other Akali leaders were previously declared 'Tanakhia' (excommunicated) by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, a punishment they served. However, with Sukhbir's return, new leadership has emerged within the party, and hopes are high that he will guide the party towards success in the upcoming elections.
