The bench, headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, informed the petitioner's lawyer that the petition was filed solely for publicity and media attention. They also highlighted the Supreme Court's earlier statement advising against escalating this minor issue.
The CJI emphasized the need to reject the practice of "making a mountain out of a molehill" from such minor incidents. He clarified that his concern wasn't personal but related to upholding the dignity of the CJI's office and the judiciary's integrity as a pillar of democracy.
What was the Protocol Violation?
The controversy arose when CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, during his visit to Maharashtra, noted the absence of senior officials like the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Mumbai Police Commissioner during his welcome. The CJI publicly expressed concern that such protocol lapses were detrimental to the judiciary's dignity.
However, following this, several individuals and organizations approached the Supreme Court demanding an investigation. The Supreme Court clarified that this minor issue should not be turned into a public controversy.
Reason for the Fine
The Supreme Court imposed a ₹7,000 fine on the petitioner's lawyer, citing his seven years of practice experience. The court reasoned that he should have understood the impropriety of filing such a baseless petition.
This fine serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the court's dignity and decorum. The court emphasized the need to resolve such minor disputes amicably rather than escalating them.

The CJI cautioned lawyers and the media against unnecessarily magnifying minor issues. Maintaining the court's dignity and the judicial system's integrity is everyone's responsibility, he stated.
