President Droupadi Murmu has arrived in Slovakia on a state visit, receiving a grand and traditional welcome. A special ceremony at the Presidential Palace saw her greeted by the Slovak President and other dignitaries.
Bratislava: President Droupadi Murmu's historic visit to Slovakia on Wednesday marks a new chapter in Indian diplomatic history. She is only the second Indian President to visit Slovakia in 29 years. This two-day visit not only showcased tradition and cordiality but is also seen as injecting new energy into India-Slovakia relations.
Traditional Welcome with Bread and Salt
At the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, President Peter Pellegrini welcomed President Murmu with traditional Slovak customs. A couple in folk attire presented her with 'bread and salt,' symbolizing warmth, respect, and friendship in Slovak tradition. She was then accorded a guard of honor.
Strategic Meetings Begin
President Murmu's visit is not merely ceremonial but a significant step towards a strategic partnership. She will hold delegation-level talks with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. She will also meet Prime Minister Robert Fico and the Speaker of the National Council, Richard Raši. These meetings are expected to yield several important agreements focusing on enhanced cooperation in areas such as defense collaboration, trade expansion, higher education, and technological innovation.
A New Dimension to Cultural Ties
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Slovakia's relationship extends beyond political and economic ties, encompassing deep cultural values. The study of Sanskrit in Slovak universities, Slovak translations of Mahatma Gandhi's works, and Slovakia's assistance to Indian students during the Ukraine crisis are cited as symbols of the historical closeness between the two nations.
This visit comes at a time when India is deepening its ties with the European Union. Bilateral dialogue and cooperation with Central European countries like Slovakia not only expands India's 'Act East' policy but also strengthens its strategic position in Europe.
