A Famous and Inspiring Story: Breaking Bad Habits
Once upon a time, Emperor Akbar was deeply troubled by an issue. When courtiers inquired, he explained, "My prince has developed the undesirable habit of thumb-sucking. Despite several attempts, we have been unable to break this habit." Hearing the Emperor's distress, a courtier informed him of a renowned fakir, known for curing all ailments. The Emperor promptly invited the fakir to the court.
Upon arriving, the fakir listened attentively to Akbar's concern. He promised to address the issue and requested a week's time. A week later, the fakir returned to the court. He gently addressed the prince, explaining the detrimental effects of thumb-sucking and the importance of breaking the habit. The prince, moved by the fakir's words, pledged to discontinue the habit. Observing this, the courtiers remarked to the Emperor, "Since the solution was so straightforward, why did the fakir take so much time? Why did he waste both our and your time?" The Emperor, swayed by their words, decided to punish the fakir.
All the courtiers supported the Emperor's decision, but Birbal remained silent. Seeing Birbal's composure, Akbar asked, "Why are you silent, Birbal?" Birbal replied, "Your Majesty, forgive my audacity, but instead of punishing the fakir, we should honour him and learn from him." The Emperor, angered, retorted, "You are opposing my decision. How dare you think in this way? Explain yourself."
Birbal then explained, "Your Majesty, last time the fakir came to the court, he himself had the habit of chewing betel nut. Upon hearing your words, he realised his mistake and decided to correct it first. Then, he helped the prince break his bad habit." The Emperor and the courtiers realized their error. They apologized to the fakir and honoured him.
