The Emperor's Dream
Once upon a time, Emperor Akbar awoke from a deep sleep, unable to return to slumber. He was troubled by a strange dream he couldn't interpret. He dreamt that his teeth fell out, one by one, until only a single tooth remained. So disturbed was he by this vision that he decided to discuss it with his council. The following day, he summoned his trusted ministers, sharing his dream and seeking their counsel. They suggested consulting an astrologer to decipher the meaning.
The next day, the Emperor summoned learned astrologers to his court. After much deliberation, they announced, "Your Majesty, this dream signifies that all your relatives will precede you in death." Hearing this, Akbar was enraged and ordered the astrologers to leave. After they departed, the Emperor called for Birbal and inquired, "Birbal, what does your interpretation of my dream reveal?"
Birbal responded, "Your Majesty, your dream signifies that you will outlive all your relatives, having the longest lifespan among them." The Emperor, pleased with this explanation, was overjoyed. The other ministers, however, thought Birbal had echoed the astrologers' prediction. Birbal then turned to the ministers, saying, "See, it was the same message, just conveyed differently. One must always communicate with nuance and consideration." With this, Birbal departed the court.
The lesson from this story is - there is always a proper way to communicate. Even upsetting news, communicated constructively, can be accepted. Thus, one should always convey thoughts with accuracy and grace.
