Presenting the renowned and inspiring story, The Wonderful Cloth
Once upon a time, in the Vijayanagara kingdom, King Krishnadevaraya presided over his court. At that moment, a beautiful woman entered the court, carrying a box. Inside was a silken sari, which she unveiled, showcasing its exquisite beauty to the king and the courtiers. The sari's splendor captivated everyone who beheld it. The woman declared that she crafted such beautiful garments and had skilled artisans who employed secret weaving techniques. She requested the king's patronage, offering to create a similar sari for him in exchange for a reward. King Krishnadevaraya agreed and provided the woman with the desired compensation. She asked for a year to complete the task and subsequently resided with her artisans within the royal palace to begin the weaving process.
The palace provided for all the woman and her artisans' needs, covering their meals and other expenses. A year passed in this manner. The king then dispatched his ministers to inspect the completed sari. Upon reaching the woman's workshop, the ministers were astonished. They found two artisans engaged in weaving, but with no visible threads or cloth. The woman explained that they were weaving the sari for the king, while the ministers expressed their inability to perceive any sari. The woman responded that only those with pure hearts and unblemished lives could see it. This assertion left the ministers perplexed. They fabricated a story of having seen the sari and departed, assuring the king of its remarkable beauty.
The king was delighted by this report. The following day, he ordered the woman to appear before the court with the completed sari. Accompanied by her artisans, she presented a box before the royal assembly. She opened the box, revealing its contents to the court. However, to the astonishment of everyone present, including the king, no one could see the sari. Observing this, Tenali Rama whispered to the king, "The woman is lying; she is deceiving all of us." Then, Tenali Rama informed the woman that neither he nor any courtier could perceive the sari. The woman, unfazed, reaffirmed that only those with pure hearts and unblemished lives could see it.
Inspired by this, Tenali Rama devised a plan. He suggested to the woman, "The king desires you to wear the sari yourself and demonstrate it to the court." At these words, the woman began to plead with the king, confessing her deception – she had fabricated the entire story of the sari. The king's anger surged, and he ordered her imprisonment. Yet, upon her earnest pleas, he relented and pardoned her, releasing her from custody. Simultaneously, he praised Tenali Rama's ingenuity and wit.
This story teaches us that – falsehood and deception cannot be concealed indefinitely. Truth always surfaces eventually.
