The Story of Tenali Rama: Who is the Unlucky One?

In the kingdom of King Krishna Deva Raya, lived a man named Chelaram. He was notorious throughout the land for a peculiar misfortune: if anyone saw his face first thing in the morning, they would go hungry all day. People called him unlucky. Chelaram, though saddened by this reputation, continued his daily life. One day, the King heard of this strange occurrence, and his curiosity was piqued. He wanted to understand if Chelaram truly was so unlucky. To investigate, he summoned Chelaram to the palace.

Unaware of the pending investigation, Chelaram happily made his way to the palace. Upon seeing him, the King observed that Chelaram seemed ordinary, like any other person. How could he be considered unlucky? The King ordered that Chelaram be lodged in a room opposite his own. Accordingly, Chelaram was housed in a chamber adjacent to the King's quarters. The luxurious accommodations, fine food, and regal ambiance of the palace delighted Chelaram. He ate heartily and fell asleep early.

The following morning, Chelaram awoke, but remained in bed. Just then, King Krishna Deva Raya entered the room. Seeing Chelaram, he went about his daily business. That day, the King had an urgent meeting, and therefore, missed his breakfast. The meeting stretched into the evening, leaving the King without time for lunch or dinner. Exhausted and hungry, the King returned to the palace, only to find a fly in the food presented before him. Enraged, he refused to eat, the frustration compounding his fatigue and hunger.

In his anger, the King held Chelaram responsible for his predicament. He concluded that Chelaram was indeed unlucky, claiming that anyone who saw his face first thing in the morning would have no food all day. Furiously, the King pronounced the death sentence upon Chelaram, decreeing that such an unlucky individual had no right to live in his kingdom. Learning of the sentence, Chelaram rushed to Tenali Rama, the only one who could possibly save him.

The next day, Chelaram was brought before the King for execution. When asked if he had any final wishes, Chelaram requested permission to address the entire court. Upon receiving permission, the court was summoned. Before the assembled crowd, the King questioned Chelaram, "Speak, Chelaram, what would you like to say?" Chelaram replied, "Your Majesty, I simply wish to state that if I am so unlucky that whoever sees me first in the morning goes hungry all day, then you too are unlucky." The courtiers and the King were stunned, looking at one another in disbelief.

The King retorted in anger, "How dare you make such a claim?" Chelaram explained, "Your Majesty, this very morning, I was the first to see your face. If seeing my face first brings misfortune, then, according to my situation, you too are unlucky." The King's anger subsided upon hearing these words, and he realized Chelaram's innocence. He promptly ordered Chelaram's release and apologized for the injustice. He asked Chelaram who had given him the idea to say such a thing. Chelaram replied, "Tenali Rama is the only one who could have saved me from this death sentence. I pleaded with him for my life." The King was pleased and highly praised Tenali Rama's wisdom. He awarded Tenali Rama a golden necklace encrusted with jewels.
