The Ingenuity of a Tube. Tenali Rama's Story: Famous Timeless Tales on Subkuz.Com!
Presenting the renowned and inspiring story, The Ingenuity of a Tube
King Krishna Deva Raya was once engaged in discussion with his courtiers. Their conversation gradually turned to the topic of cleverness. In the court of King Krishna Deva Raya, many courtiers, from the royal guru to others, felt jealous of Tenali Rama. In an attempt to belittle Tenali Rama, a minister spoke up, saying, "Your Majesty! This court boasts many intelligent and shrewd individuals, and given the opportunity, all of us could showcase our cleverness. But...?" King Krishna Deva Raya, intrigued, asked, "But what, Minister?" The general replied, "Your Majesty! I will tell you what's on the minister's mind. In actuality, in this court, no one other than Tenali Rama is given a chance to demonstrate their cleverness. Every time, Tenali Rama takes credit for cleverness. How, then, can the rest of the courtiers demonstrate their abilities?"
Upon hearing the general's words, King Krishna Deva Raya understood that all the courtiers were united against Tenali Rama. He then remained silent for a while, contemplating the matter. Suddenly, his eyes fell upon the lamp wick burning in front of the deity's image. Seeing the lamp, an idea came to him to test all the courtiers. He immediately declared, "All of you courtiers will be given a chance to prove your cleverness. Until all courtiers prove their cleverness, Tenali Rama will not intervene." The courtiers rejoiced at this news. They said, "Very well, Your Majesty! Please tell us what we must do?" King Krishna Deva Raya, pointing to the lamp, said, "Bring me two handfuls of smoke. Whoever can accomplish this task shall be deemed more intelligent than Tenali Rama."
Hearing the king's words, all the courtiers pondered and began discussing how this was possible. Could smoke be measured? In an attempt to prove their cleverness, all the courtiers tried, but none succeeded in measuring the smoke. As soon as someone attempted to measure the smoke, it dispersed away from their hands. When all the courtiers admitted defeat, one of them said, "Your Majesty! In our opinion, smoke cannot be measured. However, if Tenali Rama can do it, we will consider him even more intelligent than ourselves. But if he fails, you must regard him as one of us." The king smiled and asked, "Tenali Rama, are you ready?" Tenali Rama bowed his head and replied, "Your Majesty, I have always obeyed your commands. This time too, I will surely do as you ask."
Thereafter, Tenali Rama summoned a servant and whispered something in his ear. The servant immediately left the court. Silence descended upon the court. All the courtiers anxiously awaited to see how Tenali Rama would deliver two handfuls of smoke to the king. Their eyes fell upon the servant returning to the court, holding a glass tube about two hands long. Tenali Rama placed the end of the glass tube over the smoke rising from the lamp. Soon, the entire tube filled with smoke, and Tenali Rama quickly covered the end of the tube with a cloth, sealing it. Holding the tube towards the king, he said, "Your Majesty! Here are two handfuls of smoke." The king smiled, took the tube from Tenali Rama, and gazed at the courtiers.
All the courtiers, ashamed, bowed their heads in recognition of Tenali Rama's cleverness. Some courtiers were even on Tenali Rama's side, deeply respecting his wisdom. Impressed by Tenali Rama's intelligence and ingenuity, the king declared, "Now you must understand that it is impossible to match Tenali Rama's intellect." The courtiers remained silent, their heads bowed in acknowledgment.
This story teaches us – We should respect the intelligence of others and should not harbor envy towards their cleverness.
