Presenting the famous and inspiring story of Tenali Rama: The Hunting Bushes

King Krishnadeva used to camp outside the city during the cold season every year. During this time, the king and some of his courtiers and soldiers stayed there, setting up tents. All governmental affairs were put aside, and the days were filled with music and song, and stories and tales. On one such pleasant evening, the king felt like going hunting. He instructed his courtiers to prepare for the hunt. The next morning, the king, accompanied by other courtiers and some soldiers, set off for the hunt.

Tenali Rama was a favorite of the king, and he too was invited to accompany them. Hearing this, one courtier said, "Leave him, Your Majesty. Tenali Rama is getting on in years, and he will tire quickly if he goes hunting." All the courtiers laughed, but Tenali Rama remained silent. At this, the king said to Tenali Rama, "Pay no heed to the courtiers' words; come with us hunting." At the king's command, Tenali Rama mounted a horse and joined the entourage.

After some time, the king's party reached the forest. Scanning the area for game, the king spotted a deer nearby. Just as he raised his bow and arrow to take aim, the deer bolted, and the king pursued it on horseback.

Seeing the king chase the deer, Tenali Rama and the other courtiers followed. As the king aimed at the deer, it darted into a dense thicket. The king followed the deer into the bushes to take his aim. Then, Tenali Rama called out to the king from behind, urging him to stop. The king's attention was diverted, and he missed his shot. The deer vanished into the bushes. The king turned around, angrily, and confronted Tenali Rama, demanding to know why he had called him away from his aim. In a fit of anger, King Krishnadeva said that Tenali Rama had prevented the deer from being captured. Even after this rebuke, Tenali Rama remained silent. Upon the king's silence, Tenali Rama instructed a soldier to climb a tree and look beyond the bushes.

Following Tenali Rama's instructions, the soldier saw that the deer the king was chasing had become entangled in thorny bushes, badly wounded. After much effort, the deer managed to break free from the thorny bushes and limped away into the forest.

Descending from the tree, the soldier reported all he had seen to the king. The king was surprised. He called Tenali Rama over and asked him if he had known beforehand of the thorny bushes. Tenali Rama replied, "There are many such bushes in the forest that can leave a person injured and exhausted. I suspected that there might be such 'hunting bushes' ahead." Hearing this, the king was impressed by Tenali Rama's foresight. He turned to the other courtiers, saying, "You did not want Tenali Rama to go hunting, but it is due to him that my life has been spared today." The king patted Tenali Rama on the back, saying, "Your wisdom and insight are unparalleled."

The lesson from this story is:- Hasty actions can often lead to harm. Therefore, we should act with foresight and consider the situation and surroundings.
