The Story of the Barber Before the Kashgar Emperor

After the Jewish physician's story concluded, the barber requested permission from the emperor to share his tale. The Kashgar emperor nodded, granting his permission. With the emperor's consent, the barber said, "A merchant in this city invited me to dine at his home. That is why I am here. He had invited several of his friends as well. The house was filled with people, all happily chatting. I looked around but couldn't find the merchant who had invited me. I waited for a while. Then, I saw the merchant coming from outside with one of his friends. His friend seemed quite cheerful, but he was missing a leg." The barber greeted the merchant and inquired about his well-being.

Suddenly, the one-legged man stood up and began to leave the house. The merchant, who had invited him, called out, "Friend, where are you going? No one has eaten yet. You can't leave without eating." The one-legged man said, "I am not from this kingdom, and I do not wish to die here. There is a person in your house whose mere presence ruins everything." The merchant asked, "Who are you referring to?" The one-legged man replied, "There is a barber here. I cannot stay where he is. Please all eat, but I must leave." Everyone asked, "What happened?" After repeated questioning, he said, "I've suffered much hardship in my life because of this man. My leg was lost because of this barber. Since then, I have vowed never to see him or stay anywhere he is. This barber forced me to leave my city, Baghdad. I thought I had escaped him, but he has found me here."

"He broke my leg the first time, and now he might kill me. Therefore, I cannot stay here for a moment. I must leave this place as I did Baghdad. I cannot tolerate this man for even a minute." Saying this, the one-legged man turned to leave the merchant's house. The merchant ran after him. Seeing the merchant running, we all followed the one-legged man, trying to stop him, but he would not listen to anyone. Then, a clever idea struck the merchant. He went out with the man and lovingly said, "You are my dear friend. If you leave like this, it will upset me. You must leave this place as you left Baghdad, but first, please come to my other house and eat. I will bring you food and serve you with respect." The one-legged man agreed, and he went to the other house to eat.

After eating, the merchant brought him back to where everyone was seated. We had all eaten. Seeing the merchant and the one-legged man, everyone went to them. The one-legged man greeted everyone and asked for permission to leave. However, no one allowed him to depart. Everyone said, "You came here and told us how this barber was responsible for everything that happened to you. We feel sorry for you, but we want to hear your story. What happened to make you lose your leg?" The one-legged man said, "I don't want to stay a moment longer in front of this barber." Yet, everyone repeatedly urged him to share his story. Distressed, he said, "If I tell you my story, you will all be saddened. If you insist, I will tell it while turning my back on the barber." Everyone agreed to this. Then, the one-legged man began to recount the story of how his leg was broken.
