Introducing the renowned and inspirational story, The Sacrifice of Mahakapin.
The Himalayan forests boast unique flora and fauna, found nowhere else. Their fruits and flowers are unlike any others, incredibly sweet and fragrant, irresistible to all who encounter them. One such tree stood by a river, home to a troop of monkeys led by their wise and knowledgeable king, Mahakapin. Mahakapin decreed that no fruit should be left on the tree once ripe. The monkeys would consume them immediately. He believed that any fallen, ripe fruit reaching a human through the river could be harmful. All the monkeys respected and obeyed his command. However, one day, a ripe fruit, hidden amongst the leaves, tumbled into the river.
Carried by the current, the fruit landed where a king was enjoying a stroll with his queens. The fruit's aroma was so enchanting that the queens closed their eyes in delight. The king too was captivated by the scent. He looked around, noticing the fruit floating in the river. He picked it up and instructed his soldiers to taste it. A soldier, after tasting it, declared its exquisite sweetness. The king, too, savored it with great joy. He then ordered his soldiers to find the tree from which the fruit had fallen.
After considerable effort, the king's soldiers located the tree by the river. They saw numerous monkeys gathered on it. The soldiers, displeased, began to attack the monkeys, killing them one by one.
Witnessing the injured monkeys, Mahakapin acted with wisdom. He swiftly constructed a makeshift bridge of bamboo poles between the tree and a nearby hill. He instructed the monkeys to abandon the tree and cross to the other side of the hill using the bridge. The monkeys obeyed, crossing the bamboo bridge and safely reaching the other side. During their escape, the scared monkeys, however, trampled Mahakapin severely. The soldiers swiftly informed the king of the situation. The king, deeply impressed by Mahakapin's bravery, immediately ordered his soldiers to take Mahakapin to the palace for treatment.
However, by the time Mahakapin was brought to the palace, he had succumbed to his injuries.
This story teaches us that - bravery and wisdom earn a place in the annals of history. It also highlights the importance of wisdom in times of adversity.
