Introducing the famous and inspiring story, The Woodcutter and the Golden Axe
Years ago, in a town lived a woodcutter named Kusum. He went to the forest every day to cut wood and sold it, using the money to buy food. His routine had been the same for years. One day, while climbing a tree near a flowing river in the forest to cut its branches, the woodcutter's axe slipped and fell into the river. He quickly descended the tree and began searching for his axe, assuming it would be near the riverbank. But his axe had fallen directly into the deep, swift-flowing river.
He searched for half an hour, but when he couldn't find it, despair set in. He realised he didn't have enough money to buy a new axe. He sat down by the riverbank, heartbroken and weeping. Hearing his cries, the River God appeared. "Son," the River God asked, "what is wrong? Why are you crying? Have you lost something in this river?" The woodcutter explained how his axe had fallen into the river.
The River God listened attentively and then offered to help him find it, and departed. Soon, the River God reappeared from the river, holding a golden axe. A smile touched the woodcutter's lips, but he immediately shook his head. "This golden axe isn't mine," he said. "It must belong to a wealthy person." At this, the River God vanished once more.
After a short while, the River God surfaced again, this time holding a silver axe. The woodcutter, however, wasn't pleased. "This isn't mine either," he said. "It belongs to someone else. Please return it to its rightful owner. I only want my own axe." The River God vanished again.
After some time, the River God reappeared, this time holding an iron axe. The woodcutter's face lit up with recognition. "This is it," he said. "This is the axe that fell from my hand while I was cutting down the tree. Please give it back to me, and return the other axes to their rightful owners."
Impressed by the woodcutter's honesty and integrity, the River God said, "There is no greed in your heart. If someone else were in your place, they would have gladly taken the golden axe. But you refused both the golden and silver axes; you only wanted your own iron axe. Your pure and honest heart deeply moves me. I wish to bestow upon you both the golden and silver axes as a gift for your integrity. Keep them with your iron axe as a testament to your honesty."
The lesson of this story is - Honesty is the greatest wealth one can possess in this world. Honest and good people are always admired.
