Ajit Agarkar's Tenure as Chief Selector Extended by BCCI Until 2026

The Indian team squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced recently. Just two days later, the BCCI took a significant decision, modifying the contract of chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Sports News: Just two days after the announcement of the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025, the BCCI has taken a major decision. The contract of Ajit Agarkar, the Chief Selector of the Indian cricket team, has been extended until June 2026. The BCCI has taken this step in view of the achievements and strategic changes of Team India during his tenure.

Ajit Agarkar's Tenure Extended

Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the head of the Indian selection committee in June 2023. Under his leadership, India achieved success in several major tournaments. According to BCCI sources, the board had decided to extend his contract even before IPL 2025. According to a report in the Indian Express, the decision to retain Agarkar was taken by the BCCI a few months ago. The board is satisfied with the changes and victories in Indian cricket since his arrival. Under Agarkar's leadership, the Indian selection committee has taken big and bold decisions.

  • T20 World Cup 2024 – India captured this title after 17 years.
  • Champions Trophy 2025 (initial) – India won another ICC title by winning the final.
  • ODI World Cup 2023 – India reached the final and performed brilliantly, although missed out on the title.

These achievements have strengthened Ajit Agarkar's image as a visionary and decisive selector.

Possibility of Changes in the Selection Committee

The current selection committee includes Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath. But changes may be seen in the panel at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in September. According to reports, S Sharath may be removed as he has completed almost four years in the selection role. According to BCCI rules, this is the maximum permitted period.

According to sources, the board has not yet taken a final decision on the future of SS Das and Subroto Banerjee. However, it is likely that the change may be limited to only one post. Officials say that the current panel has done a good job in its tenure and no major reshuffle is required.
