Why Do Earthquakes Occur?
An earthquake is a sudden vibration on the Earth's surface. Its primary cause is the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. The Earth's outer layer, called the crust, is divided into several large pieces. These pieces, or plates, are constantly moving slowly. When these plates collide, slide past each other, or move over and under each other, stress builds up along their edges. This stress eventually becomes too much to bear and is suddenly released in the form of a jolt. This jolt is felt as an earthquake.
