Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday made a major accusation, stating that Gaurav Gogoi, the state unit president and Member of Parliament for Congress, is "a Pakistani agent."
Guwahati: Assam's political landscape was stirred when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leveled a very serious accusation against Congress MP and state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi. Sarma stated that Gogoi is "100 percent a Pakistani agent" and that he would make evidence public regarding this at the appropriate time. This statement comes when political tension in the state is at its peak, and a war of words has intensified between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha by-elections.
Himanta Sarma says - Foreign powers established Gogoi in India
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati on Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Gaurav Gogoi is a Pakistani agent. He has been established in our country by foreign powers. I will present the evidence before everyone when the time is right." He added that he would not hold a press conference currently, as he does not want to divert attention from the ongoing investigation related to the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
"After the investigation into the Zubeen Garg case is complete, I will make public the evidence that will prove Gogoi is influenced by foreign interests," Sarma stated.

Congress Retaliates - Script of a C-grade Bollywood film
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi sharply reacted to the Chief Minister's accusation. He stated that Himanta Sarma's allegations are like a "C-grade Bollywood film" that is destined to flop because the people of Assam know the truth. Gogoi said, "The Chief Minister has to resort to such statements to divert attention from the state's real problems: unemployment, corruption, and inflation. The people of Assam know that this is merely political drama."
Gaurav Gogoi is the son of Assam's late former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He pursued higher education at Cambridge University and later returned to India to become active in politics. He is currently a Congress MP from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency and serves as the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Gogoi is known for being vocal on issues of environment, youth empowerment, and education reform.
In 2013, Gogoi married Elizabeth Colburn, who was born in Britain. Elizabeth is a British-origin social worker who works in the fields of climate change and environmental conservation. Some BJP leaders claim that Gogoi has foreign contacts through his wife, which has given rise to this controversy.
Political Atmosphere Heats Up
This controversy has emerged in Assam's politics at a time when the BJP is consistently accusing the opposition of operating under foreign influence and pursuing an "anti-national agenda." Chief Minister Sarma's statement is considered part of this campaign. Political analysts in the state believe that this statement is not only part of BJP's electoral strategy but also an attempt to control the narrative regarding the Congress leadership.
Political observers say,
"Himanta Sarma is known for his aggressive statements. However, the level of accusation he has made this time could become a subject of international discussion."
