Assam is poised to become the first Indian state to launch its own satellite. This ambitious project, involving the development and launch of a satellite named ASSAMSAT, will be undertaken in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
Guwahati: Assam is preparing to launch a satellite, potentially becoming the first Indian state to achieve this milestone. The state government proposed this ambitious project in the 2025 budget, outlining the launch of a satellite called "ASSAMSAT." This satellite aims to ensure a continuous and reliable data stream for crucial socio-economic projects. It will be developed with the cooperation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
IN-SPACe works to promote private investment and innovation in India's space sector, making Assam's initiative a significant addition to the nation's space program. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a budget of ₹450-500 crore for this project. The satellite will prove useful in critical areas such as agriculture, disaster management, security, infrastructure, and border surveillance.

The Assam government's decision to launch this satellite stems from a desire to boost the socio-economic development of the state. The satellite will provide the following benefits:
* Assistance in Disaster Management: Assam is annually affected by natural disasters like floods and landslides. This satellite will provide early flood warnings, accelerating relief and rescue operations.
* Revolutionizing Agriculture: Satellite data will enable precise analysis of soil quality, crop patterns, and weather forecasts, allowing farmers to make better decisions.
* Border Security and Monitoring of Illegal Infiltration: The satellite will monitor the state's international border and provide information on illegal activities.
* Aid in Infrastructure and Urban Development: The satellite will be useful for planning and monitoring roads, electricity, water, and other essential services in the state.
* Environmental Protection: The satellite will be used to monitor deforestation, wildlife conservation, and pollution levels.
ISRO and IN-SPACe Collaboration
The Assam government is working closely with scientists from ISRO and IN-SPACe to ensure the mission's success. IN-SPACe is dedicated to promoting private space companies and startups in India, facilitating the use of cutting-edge technologies. "This satellite will digitally empower Assam, providing real-time data for the state's diverse needs. This will be a landmark step in India's space sector."

How is a satellite launched?
ASSAMSAT will likely be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. India utilizes three primary launch vehicles for satellite launches:
* PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle): Suitable for small and medium-sized satellites.
* GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle): Deploys satellites weighing over 2200 kg into geostationary orbit.
* SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle): Ideal for small satellites at a lower cost.
Either GSLV or PSLV may be used for this mission to place the satellite in its designated orbit.
