Abu Azmi's comments on the Wari pilgrimage spark controversy. NCP and BJP sharply criticize him, accusing him of disrupting communal harmony and demanding strict government action.
Politics: Samajwadi Party leader and MLA Abu Azmi is once again embroiled in controversy over his statements. This time, his comments regarding Maharashtra's historic Wari pilgrimage, where he stated that it causes significant traffic congestion, have created a stir in Maharashtra's political landscape. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a member of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition government, has labeled his remarks as communal and inflammatory.
What Abu Azmi Said
During a press conference on Sunday, Abu Azmi stated that while the Muslim community never opposes Hindu festivals, complaints arise when Muslims offer prayers on the streets. He further argued that Muslims have never opposed the Wari pilgrimage, but leaders like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath repeatedly make statements regarding street prayers.
NCP Expresses Strong Displeasure
NCP's chief spokesperson, Anand Paranjpe, described Azmi's comments as objectionable and divisive. He asserted that Azmi is becoming a toxic element in Maharashtra's politics, repeatedly making controversial and communal statements to disrupt the atmosphere. The party has demanded strict action against Azmi from the government.
Warkari Tradition and Muslim Participation
The NCP emphasized the cultural and historical significance of the Wari pilgrimage. Paranjpe stated that this 800-year-old tradition sees lakhs of devotees from across the state carrying the palanquins of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram to Pandharpur. He also highlighted the participation and service of the Muslim community in this pilgrimage, calling the negative comments deeply unfortunate.
Accusation of Anti-Hindu Sentiment
Nitesh Rane, the state's Ports Minister and BJP leader, also reacted bly to Azmi's statement. He stated that no one should dare to make such comments about Hindu culture and festivals. He questioned why such criticism is leveled even when events like the Maha Kumbh and Wari are not year-round occurrences. He further argued that questioning the Hajj pilgrimage is not a solution.
Attempt to Create Communal Tension
Both the NCP and BJP allege that Azmi deliberately makes such statements to incite communal tension. The NCP spokesperson stated that this is a highly sensitive matter, and leaders should exercise caution before making such remarks. He added that this is merely a tactic to gain political mileage, but it can harm society.
