Bihar government led by Samrat Choudhary to face floor test in Assembly

The Bihar government led by Samrat Choudhary will face a floor test in the 243-member Assembly, where the ruling alliance holds 201 seats against the opposition’s 41, with attention on voting participation and alignment.

Bihar’s political landscape is set for a key development as the government led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary prepares to face a floor test in the state  on Friday.

The confidence motion will be taken up during a special session, with the government seeking to demonstrate its majority on the floor of the House. While the ruling alliance appears to hold a clear numerical advantage, the proceedings are being closely watched for their political significance beyond arithmetic.

In the 243-member Assembly, the ruling side commands a total of 201 legislators. The composition includes Bharatiya Janata Party with 88 members, Janata Dal (United) with 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) with 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha with 5, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha with 4.

The opposition comprises 41 legislators, including Rashtriya Janata Dal with 25 members, Congress with 6, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen with 5, Left parties with 3, and others accounting for 2 members.

Based on these numbers, the government is expected to secure the confidence motion. However, the session is being viewed as a significant political exercise rather than a procedural formality.

Proceedings in the Assembly will begin in the morning with an address by the Speaker. This will be followed by the presentation of the confidence motion by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. A detailed debate is expected thereafter, with Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav likely to raise multiple issues against the government.

Attention remains focused on the voting pattern during the session. Key aspects include whether all legislators participate in the vote, whether the opposition maintains full unity, and whether any instances of cross-voting or absence emerge.

Recent political developments have seen instances where some legislators abstained from voting, making participation levels a point of observation in the current session.
