Bobby Deol Turns 57, Reflects on Career Spanning Early Success, Decline and Recent Comeback

Actor Bobby Deol turns 57 as his career reflects early success in the 19 from mainstream Hindi cinema, and a renewed phase following roles in ‘Aashram’ and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’, along with upcoming film projects across Hindi and South Indian industries.

Veteran Hindi film actor Bobby Deol turned 57 on January 27. The younger son of actor Dharmendra, Deol entered Hindi cinema in the 1990s with the aim of carrying forward his family’s acting legacy. He made a notable debut and delivered several commercially successful films in the early phase of his career before experiencing a prolonged period of professional decline.

Deol made his acting debut in 1995 with the film ‘Barsaat’, which established him as a leading actor. He subsequently appeared in films including ‘Gupt’, ‘Soldier’ and ‘Badal’, working alongside actors such as Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta. Over time, opportunities in solo-lead projects diminished, and his later appearances in multi-starrer films did not result in sustained box office success. As audience preferences shifted toward different narratives and character types, Deol gradually receded from mainstream Hindi cinema.

In an effort to revive his film career, Deol appeared in ‘Race 3’ following support from Salman Khan, though the film did not alter his professional trajectory. Prior to his return to films, Deol featured in the OTT series ‘Aashram’, where he portrayed a self-styled godman. While the series brought him renewed visibility, a significant turning point in his film career came in 2023.

Deol played the character Abrar in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film ‘Animal’, which starred Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. Despite limited screen time, the role attracted widespread attention. In an interview, Deol stated that he was offered the part after Vanga noticed a photograph from a Celebrity Cricket League match and felt Deol’s expression suited the character. At the time, Deol said he was facing a lack of work opportunities.

Following ‘Animal’, Deol received offers from South Indian film industries. He appeared in projects including ‘Kanguva’ and ‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu’, expanding his work beyond Hindi cinema. He is also scheduled to appear in Vijay Thalapathy’s upcoming film ‘Jana Nayagan’.

Deol has additionally worked in Anurag Kashyap’s film ‘Bandar’, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He was also seen in the series ‘The Bads of Bollywood’, directed by Aryan Khan, where he portrayed the character Ajay Talwar.

Deol is set to appear in the Hindi film ‘Alpha’, alongside Alia Bhatt, which is slated for release this year. Details regarding his role in the film have not been disclosed.
