Chinese President Xi Jinping has cancelled his planned participation in the summit, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is now preparing to attend virtually.

PM Modi Receives Special Honor in Brazil

The Brazilian government has extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend a special state dinner during the BRICS summit. This invitation reflects Brazil’s respect for India and the strategic relationship between the two nations.

According to diplomatic sources, Brazil is currently the chair of BRICS and is actively working to elevate bilateral relations with India. Consequently, PM Modi has been invited to the special dinner.

China Feels the Impact

Brazil’s initiative has caused unease among China. Reports indicate that President Xi Jinping has cancelled his participation in the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro.

According to a report from the Hong Kong-based reputable newspaper ‘South China Morning Post,’ Chinese Premier Li Qiang will be attending the summit instead. This is the first time in the last decade that Jinping will be absent from the BRICS summit.

Putin Will Not Attend in Person

Russian President Vladimir Putin will also not be attending the summit in person. Information from Moscow indicates that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia at the summit.

Putin will participate in the summit virtually via video link. It’s worth noting that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, which has limited his international travel.

What’s Special About the BRICS Summit?

The 17th BRICS Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 6-7 this year. BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Recently, the group has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This expansion has further enhanced the organization’s influence in global politics and economics.
