An 18-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her father in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district following a dispute over her relationship with a man from another community. Police arrested the accused after a complaint was filed by the victim’s mother.
The incident took place in Bhaktapur village under the Risia police station area. According to police, the woman, identified as Sangeeta, had returned home late at night after meeting her boyfriend when an argument broke out between her and her father, Hardev Chauhan.
Police said Sangeeta was in a relationship with Azad, a युवक from the same village belonging to another community. Family members were aware of the relationship, and the father had previously attempted several times to dissuade his daughter from continuing contact with him. However, communication between the two reportedly continued.
According to police, the woman visited her boyfriend’s house on Monday night. After returning home late, her father questioned her and objected to her meeting him again, leading to a dispute between them.
Family members alleged that after the argument, Sangeeta went to sleep in her room. Later that night, her father allegedly strangled her to death.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning, after which the victim’s mother informed police. Officers reached the spot, took custody of the body and began an investigation.
Based on the complaint filed by the mother, police registered a murder case against Hardev Chauhan. Following questioning, he was arrested and sent to jail.
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh said a dispute had taken place between the father and daughter over the relationship, after which the accused carried out the killing.
During the investigation, police also found that the woman had earlier left home with her boyfriend. A case had previously been registered by the father, following which police traced both individuals.
After counselling, Azad had been sent to jail and was released on Sunday. According to police, the woman visited him again the following day, after which tensions escalated inside the house.
