A significant step has been taken in the Goa nightclub fire case. The Goa Police have suspended the passports of Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane Nightclub.

Panaji: A horrific accident in Goa on Sunday night has shaken not only India but also the international community. A devastating fire broke out at the popular Birch by Romeo Lane Nightclub in the state, resulting in the tragic deaths of 25 people. The investigation into the incident is progressing rapidly, and in the meantime, authorities have taken a significant step by suspending the passports of club owners Luthra Brothers – Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra. This action has been taken based on the severity of the incident, security violations, and suspected activities of the owners.

Club Owners Flew Abroad After the Incident

The Goa Police investigation revealed that the club owners fled India shortly after the fire broke out. Initial reports on Wednesday disclosed that the two brothers had gone to Thailand, while Indian investigating agencies had already been tracking them. This revelation has further complicated the case, as it clearly indicates that the Luthra Brothers were attempting to evade responsibility for the incident by fleeing the country.

Why Were the Passports Suspended?

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this action was taken under Section 10A of the Passport Act of 1967. Under this provision, the central government or any authorized officer can immediately suspend a person’s passport, particularly when that person is under investigation for a serious offense or is suspected of fleeing the country. According to the rules, a person whose passport is suspended:

  • Cannot travel abroad,
  • And if they are already abroad, they may face a return process.

This directly means that the Luthra Brothers are now unable to travel internationally and must return to India to participate in the investigation.

The Fire Incident: What Was the Cause?

Although the investigation is still in its initial stages, police and the fire department are investigating the cause of the fire. Initial reports raise several serious questions:

  • Was fire safety protocol not followed at the nightclub?
  • Were there sufficient emergency exits in the premises?
  • Were there more people present in the club than the permitted capacity?

Police have stated that there is a high probability of irregularities in safety standards, and this is believed to be the reason for the loss of so many lives. The Goa administration and police officials have clarified that strict action will be taken against anyone or any entity found to be in violation of safety standards.
