On Tuesday, a teenage girl, angered by her mother's scolding, jumped into the Rapti River from Karmani Bridge in Gorakhpur. Upon receiving information, boatmen brothers Sandeep Sahni and Santosh Sahni, who arrived at the scene, immediately launched their boat and safely rescued the girl. Police later handed her over to her family.
People present near the bridge stated that Karmani Bridge has already become infamous as a "suicide point," as four similar incidents have occurred here in the last three to four months, three of which resulted in fatalities. They have demanded that the local administration increase security, install iron mesh on the railings, and enhance vigilance.
One of the boatmen brothers present at the bridge stated that they were working in the field, and upon seeing the girl jump, they immediately entered the river with their boat. The rescue was challenging due to the turbulent current. The police outpost in-charge stated that the teenage girl, during interrogation, said that she was angry with her mother, which led her to take this step.
The family members and local residents have urged the administration to deploy regular patrols on the bridge, strengthen the police network, and install mesh on the railings to prevent such incidents.
