Weather patterns across India continue to fluctuate, with heatwave conditions persisting in several regions while thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall affect others, according to the India Meteorological Department.
In New Delhi and surrounding areas, thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall were recorded on Friday night, and such variability in weather conditions is expected to continue over the coming days.
Thunderstorm and Rain Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR
Rainfall accompanied by intense thunder and lightning was recorded in Delhi and nearby areas on Friday night. According to the weather department, an active weather system moving from west to east is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall along with b winds of 40–60 km/h over the next few hours. An orange alert has been issued, with advisories for residents to remain indoors. There is also a risk of lightning strikes and incidents such as falling trees.
Heatwave Conditions Forecast in Six States
The department has forecast heatwave conditions in multiple states over the coming days. The affected regions include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Between April 19 and April 22, temperatures in these areas are expected to remain significantly above normal levels, with more severe conditions anticipated in Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh.
Heavy Rainfall Alert in Eastern and Northeastern Regions
Contrasting weather conditions are expected in eastern and northeastern India, where thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are forecast. Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rainfall from April 19 to April 21. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience heavy rainfall on April 19, 20, and 21. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may receive heavy rainfall on April 19, while parts of Bihar and Jharkhand could see light rainfall and b winds. Alerts have also been issued regarding lightning strikes in these regions.
Rainfall and Snowfall Expected in Hill States
Weather conditions in northern hill states remain cold and unstable. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall and snowfall over the next few days. Wind speeds of 30–50 km/h are expected, along with the possibility of hailstorms. In some areas of Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms is also forecast, potentially affecting road conditions.
Weather Changes in Central and Western India
Several parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra are expected to witness changing weather conditions. Light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and winds of 30–40 km/h is likely, with the possibility of hailstorms in some locations. Marathwada and Vidarbha regions are expected to remain particularly unstable.
Rainfall Activity in Southern India
Rainfall and lightning alerts have also been issued for southern states. Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience thunderstorms, while Kerala and Rayalaseema face the risk of lightning strikes. The Konkan and Goa regions may witness rainfall accompanied by b winds, and central Maharashtra could experience hailstorms.
According to weather experts, the simultaneous occurrence of rainfall and storm activity in some regions and heatwave conditions in others is due to the interaction between a Western Disturbance and local heat conditions.
