India won the gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Asian Games with a time of 3 minutes 29.69 seconds. Neeru Dhanda won gold in women’s trap shooting, while Gulveer Singh completed a medal hat-trick by winning bronze in the 5000m.
The Indian women’s team won the gold medal in the 4x400m relay after completing the final race in 3 minutes 29.69 seconds. With this gold, India’s tally of gold medals at the Asian Games reached six.
The women’s relay team’s performance added another gold to India’s medal tally. The result came alongside medal-winning performances by Gulveer Singh in the 5000m and Neeru Dhanda in women’s trap shooting.
On Tuesday, India crossed the 50-medal mark at the Asian Games for the sixth consecutive time.
The Asian Games are held every four years. Since 2006, India has won 50 or more medals at every edition of the Asian Games, taking its run of crossing the 50-medal mark to six consecutive editions.
Gulveer Singh won the bronze medal in the men’s 5000m race with a time of 13 minutes 32.75 seconds.
Gulveer had previously won silver medals in the 10,000m and 1500m events. With the bronze in the 5000m, he took his Asian Games medal tally to three.
Gulveer became the first Indian male runner to complete a medal hat-trick at the Asian Games by winning medals in three different events.
Neeru Dhanda won the gold medal in women’s trap shooting, setting a new record. She became the first Indian woman to win gold in this event.
Her gold came 10 days after she had been hospitalised because of flu. During her hospitalisation, her condition was so poor that she was unable to eat or drink anything for five days.
Despite the illness, Neeru returned to competition and won the gold medal.
Neeru received support from her coach ManSher Singh during her illness. He encouraged her to leave the illness and its difficulties behind and focus on the competition.
After winning the gold medal, Neeru recalled her coach’s advice and said, “ManSher sir just said to forget what happened and focus on the target, and I did exactly that.”
Neeru participated in the competition only a few days after recovering from her health problems and finished at the top.
With Neeru Dhanda’s gold, India has now won two gold medals in shooting at the Asian Games.
India’s first gold in shooting came in the mixed pistol event. Neeru then won gold in women’s trap shooting, giving India its first individual gold medal in the event.
India has also won eight silver and four bronze medals in shooting. The sport’s total medal tally has therefore reached 14.
Neeru Dhanda’s gold medal is also India’s first gold in an individual event at these Asian Games. India had previously won gold in the mixed shooting event.
Neeru’s victory came after her return to competition following hospitalisation for flu.
