India’s supply of LPG and crude oil remains fully secure despite rising tensions in the Middle East, the Petroleum Ministry said, adding that diversified imports and reduced dependence on the Strait of Hormuz are ensuring uninterrupted energy availability in the country.
Government Assurance
Petroleum Ministry Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery) Sujata Sharma said India meets its crude oil requirements through imports from around 40 different countries, preventing dependence on any single region. India’s total crude oil consumption is about 189 million metric tonnes, with a daily requirement of around 5.5 million barrels of oil. She said supplies have continued without disruption and that two crude oil cargoes have recently been dispatched for India.
Reduced Dependence on Strait of Hormuz
Sujata Sharma said India has developed multiple supply options to strengthen energy security. At present, about 70 percent of crude oil reaches India through routes other than the Strait of Hormuz. This helps limit the impact of tensions in the Middle East and ensures continuity of the country’s energy supply.

She added that supplies of domestic PNG and CNG used in vehicles are also operating normally. While some limited effects may arise due to global circumstances, essential services are not facing any negative impact.
Availability of LPG Cylinders
Sujata Sharma said there is no need for concern regarding the availability of LPG cylinders. Deliveries are being ensured within about two and a half days after booking. She said the current period is challenging globally, but India’s energy supply situation remains stable and under control. Consumers are receiving cylinders within normal timelines and no shortages will be allowed.
Indian Ships in the Strait of Hormuz
A total of 28 Indian ships are currently deployed in the Strait of Hormuz region. Of these, 24 ships are in the western part of the Strait of Hormuz with a total of 677 Indian sailors on board. Four ships are located in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz with 11 Indian sailors on board. The ministry and the Indian Navy are continuously monitoring the situation and are prepared for any emergency.
India’s Energy Position Amid Global Oil and Gas Uncertainty
Amid tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty in global oil supply, India has strengthened its energy security through diversified sourcing and reduced reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. Government and private sector companies are working together to ensure continuous availability of oil and gas in the country.
