Weather Update: The monsoon is displaying its formidable intensity in India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that rainfall will continue in many parts of the country for the next week. Residents of Delhi, NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, in particular, need to be cautious of heavy rainfall. Several states in South India will also continue to be affected by persistent rains. The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Delhi-NCR.

Orange Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Delhi-NCR

The weather in Delhi-NCR is expected to remain volatile for the next few days. According to the IMD, Delhi and surrounding areas are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with the possibility of heavy downpours in some places. The department has predicted intermittent rainfall from July 23rd to 26th. The reason behind this rainfall is attributed to the cyclonic pressure over western Rajasthan and Pakistan, and the monsoon trough extending to the Bay of Bengal.

As a result, cloud cover will persist in Delhi, Haryana, and NCR. Northern India Braces for Rain: Heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal, Uttarakhand, UP, and Rajasthan.

  • Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Himachal Pradesh is likely to experience heavy rainfall from July 23rd and from July 26th to 28th. Uttarakhand is expected to have continuous intermittent rainfall from July 23rd to 28th. There remains a risk of cloudbursts and landslides in mountainous areas.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Punjab-Haryana: The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase in the plains of Uttar Pradesh between July 25th and 28th. A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Punjab and Haryana on July 22nd, 23rd, 27th, and 28th.
  • Rajasthan: Western Rajasthan is likely to experience heavy rainfall on July 27th and 28th. Eastern Rajasthan is expected to have heavy rainfall between July 23rd and 26-28th.

Alert in Jammu and Kashmir, South India also to be Affected by Rain

Jammu and Kashmir are warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the coming days. The risk of landslides and flash floods may increase in hilly areas. The rain's onslaught is unlikely to cease in South India. Kerala, Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Konkan, and Goa are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 6-7 days. In particular, Telangana may experience torrential rainfall in many areas on July 22nd.

The rainfall will also continue in Central Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Many states in eastern and central India will also not get respite from the rains. West Bengal (Ganga region), Odisha, and Jharkhand have been warned of heavy rainfall between July 24th and 27th.

Risk of Lightning Strikes, Stay Alert

The Meteorological Department has warned that there is a possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain with lightning in the western Himalayan region and plains. There will also be a risk of lightning strikes during this time. Therefore, people are advised to stay away from trees and power poles. Use an umbrella or raincoat during rain and do not stand in open areas.

When the Meteorological Department issues an Orange Alert, it means that the weather can be very bad and there may be a danger to life and property. In this, people are advised to exercise extra caution and avoid going out of the house. Orange Alert is usually issued for severe conditions like heavy rain, snowfall, storm or heat wave.
