SpaceX and xAI merge in $1.25 trillion deal to integrate AI and space technology

SpaceX has merged with AI startup xAI in a deal valued at approximately $1.25 trillion, granting SpaceX access to Grok AI, the social media platform X, and advanced data processing capabilities as the companies plan integrated AI and space-based infrastructure.

SpaceX has entered into a merger with artificial intelligence startup xAI, bringing AI and space technology onto a shared platform under Elon Musk’s leadership. The deal was executed in the United States at a time when discussions around a potential SpaceX initial public offering are ongoing.

Under the terms of the merger, SpaceX will gain access to xAI’s advanced artificial intelligence tools, including the Grok AI chatbot, the social media platform X, and enhanced data processing capabilities. The company stated that the objective is to integrate AI development with space-based energy and computing resources to improve scalability and long-term sustainability.

The combined entity formed through the SpaceX–xAI merger has been valued at approximately $1.25 trillion. The transaction has drawn attention across the global technology sector, coinciding with preparations related to SpaceX’s potential entry into public markets.

According to the company, the merger is intended to support the development of new technological capabilities across both terrestrial and space environments. These include satellite networks, AI-driven communication systems, and real-time data infrastructure designed to operate across Earth and space.

Following the merger, SpaceX will directly benefit from xAI’s artificial intelligence technologies. These include the Grok AI chatbot and the digital capabilities of the social media platform X, which are expected to support data processing and user interaction functions.

The company has previously outlined plans related to solar-powered satellites and space-based data centres. The merger is expected to accelerate these initiatives by aligning AI computing requirements with space-based energy and infrastructure resources.

In a statement, the company noted that existing AI systems rely heavily on large, ground-based data centres that place significant demands on electricity, cooling, and the environment. It added that, over the long term, space-based infrastructure could emerge as a viable option for supporting sustainable AI growth.

The company further stated that the integration of SpaceX’s satellite network with xAI’s artificial intelligence capabilities could enable developments in direct mobile connectivity, high-speed internet services, and real-time information systems.
